Friday Food Challenge - 29/08/2014

Friday Food Challenge

On Friday Totara did a food challenge for Jenny's birthday! We made steak & cheese pie, fried rice with bacon, cake pops, pancakes, pinwheels and fruit scrolls, we were judged on presentation, taste, team work and effective planning. "I think this day showed how totara can cooperate" said Kerry, "I think it was insane" said Anna.

Everyone is HUNGRY!

  2. hello my friends :)
It was interesting to see how everyone worked in the kitchen.
We solved problems by doing lots of talking and brain work.
An example of working cooperatively was how we all just helped each other in times of need.
This challenge felt slightly crazy because it was so out of the blue and everything was a bit hectic.
Something that surprised me was how many dishes we all seemed to use.
An idea for next time might be to organize it sooner and maybe to make a little less food.
In terms of the Cake pops that Olivia and Anna did. I thought they turned out fairly well, sure we needed a bit more time and to make a few less but they looked good and tasted even better. It was a good idea to make them because it was something new and exciting.
I hope we can do some more cooking challenges with a few alterations.

  3. It was challenging because of the time limit Nathan needed the stove so I waited for him to finish but I did not know that fide rice would take so long so I had to make a 35 minuet recipe but I did it in 15 minuets and instead of using real chocolate I should of used Nutella it would of melted better. this challenge was stressful and I want to do it again but with less food, I was too full.

The presentation would have been better if I had nice pots and plates and if the sauce was more melted I would have drizzled it onto the pancakes but I could not. I changed the recipe flour to gluten free so other members of our class could eat it. Next time I think we should group up in to pair the other pair that is not your pair has to buy weird food that does not match and the nicest food that tasted good wins.

  4. I really enjoyed the food challenge and I would like to do it again!
When we had to solve problems we worked together and fixed the problem quickly. An example of working co-operatively was when we all helped clean up and it made it quicker. Something that surprised me was that the pinwheels did not work, I thought they would turn out better than they did. An idea for next time is to stew the pie mixture before it goes in the oven, that will make the meat very tender and easier to chew. I also would like to use non gluten free flakey or puff pastry so it puffs up and goes crunchy. Over all I thought it went well and would really like it do something else with food like we could get given $25-30 per group and we have to go to the supermarket and buy enough food to feed the whole class and cook a decent meal to eat.

  5. When Kerry said to us on Thursday that we were going to do a food challenge, I felt excited because I like doing different challenges with the class. A problem I
. solved was that the cake didn't have the flour to help it stick together. Me and Anna worked really well together because we took on different roles throughout the challenge so we would have our own things to do so we weren't rushing round at the end. This challenge felt really fun but pressurised at the same time because we were all in the kitchen and there wasn't much time.

  6. I enjoyed Friday and it was very filling and tasty.
We solved problems because we used spray on cooking spray instead of baking paper. An example of Helena and I working co-operatively would be when we worked separately, but used each other to help. This challenge felt really fun and awesome, but when our fruit scrolls didn't really work, it wasn't nice hearing mean comments from the boys. Something that surprised me was that our food still tasted really nice. An idea for next time is only doing 1 thing, and an easier type of food. Jenny

  7. "I really enjoyed the day, it was lots of fun"
Our pinwheels didn't look how they were supposed to, they sort of exploded, at first we were a little disappointed but we arranged them nicely and got over it.
We worked co-operatively and separated the jobs so we had different tasks that would meet up and we would help each other with those.
This challenge was kind of easy we choose some easy items to bake.
Something that surprised me was they tasted really good.
An idea for next time is to find a certain number of random items and you have to make a meal out of it.
